Posted: May 18 2013 by ppowers

A Fort Dodge police officer was assaulted on Friday afternoon. Officer Chris Weiland conducted a traffic stop with a gold 1997 Toyota at the intersection of Sixth Avenue South and 15th Street at about 3:39 p.m. The vehicle was occupied by two subjects. The passenger, later identified as 40 year Mark Mendenhall of Fort Dodge provided false information as to his true identity, causing Officer Weiland to request an additional officer to his location for his assistance. As additional officers responded, Mendenhall struggled with Officer Weiland and fled the stop on foot. During the struggle Officer Weiland sustained an injury to his shoulder. Officer Weiland was able to broadcast that Mendenhall was fleeing as Sgt. Dan Charlson and Officer Leighton Walker arrived in the area. Sgt. Charlson and Officer Walker located and apprehended Mendenhall who was hiding under the rear porch of a residence in the 600 block of South 15th Street. Both Mendenhall and Officer Weiland were transported to Trinity Regional Medical Center for treatment. Officer Weiland was treated and released while Mendenhall was held for observation. On Friday evening, Mendenhall was released from the hospital and was booked into the Webster County Jail for Assault on a Peace Officer and Interference with Official Acts-both Aggravated Misdemeanors. He was also booked for an outstanding felony warrant for violation of parole.
