Improvements to Clarion's storm sewer system will be a major project for the community this year. On Monday, the Clarion City Council met with Tom Madden of Yaggy Colby Associates to discuss the work that will be involved. The cost of construction will amount to $666,685. Council members approved a resolution ordering the bids, fixing amount of bid security, and ordering the clerk to publish the notice,setting the date for a public hearing on the plans,specifications,form of contract and estimate of costs for the storm sewer work.
Shirley Helgevold of the MIDAS Council of Governments was present to discuss the Hazard Mitigation Plan for Clarion. Helgevold informed the council that Wright County has approved the County plan pending approval from the cities. The Clarion City Council on Monday tabled action on adopting the plan until the February 4th council meeting.
There was the approval of a letter of intent between Hagie Manufacturing Corporation and the city of Clarion for the construction of a new hangar at the Clarion Municipal Airport.
The date of Thursday, February 7 was set for a public hearing for the 2014 fiscal year budget workshop beginning at 5:00 p.m.
Clarion City Administrator Rochelle Pohlman informed the council that Clarion Packaging has requested the city change the name of the street on which their company is located. Clarion Packaging officials say that truck drivers are having trouble finding their location, since the GPS locator sends them down South Main Street to 5th Avenue which is not a through street. The council declined to make a decision and will take this under advisement.
Pohlman also informed the Council that the Hotel Motel tax revenue has brought in $10,372 since it was implemented with 25% going to parks and recreation and 75% to tourism in Clarion. The Hotel/Motel committee has awarded $4,777 in grant requests to date.
