Anhydrous ammonia leak in Stanhope.

 An anhydrous ammonia leak forced the evacuation of some nearby homes in Stanhope Wednesday afternoon. Stanhope and Stratford firefighters were called to contain the leak at the Heartland Coop facility on Railway Street. The Regional Hazmat Team from Fort Dodge were summoned to the scene to close a valve in stopping the leak. A worker tried to stop the leak received a corrosive substance to his face and upper body area but declined medical treatment. At least 2,600 gallons of anhydrous ammonia leaked from the tank yesterday afternoon. Crews worked on plugging up the tank for about two hours. In addition to the fire departments on the scene, the Hamilton County Sheriff's Department and Ellsworth Jewell Stanhope Police offered their assistance.
