Iowa State finishes regular season 7-5 with 48-14 thrashing of TCU

The Iowa State Cyclones entered senior day at the tail-end of a disappointing regular season. A team that had started the season in the Top 10 and hopes of a Big 12 Championship, came into Black Friday with a 6-5 record, facing a TCU team that was one win away from bowl eligibility.

The Cyclones would send out the most successful senior class in school history on the right note, with their 48-14 thrashing of TCU in Jack Trice Stadium. Andrew Mevis got the scoring started with a 27-yard field goal to put Iowa State up 3-0 early in the 1st quarter. It wasn’t until the 2nd quarter that the Cyclones got into the endzone, on a 40-yard touchdown run from Jirehl Brock to put Iowa State up 10-0.

The next Cyclone score was a historic one, as Breece Hall set the NCAA Division I record for consecutive games with a rushing touchdown with 24 consecutive games. The previous record was 23 consecutive games, set by former Arkansas Razorback running back Bill Burnett from 1968 to 1970. The 39-yard scamper gave Iowa State a 17-0 lead, before a touchdown pass from TCU quarterback Max Duggan to Blair Conwright made the score 17-7 at halftime.

Iowa State took their first possession of the 2nd half and worked a short-field into a 22-yard touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Breece Hall to put the Cyclones up 24-7. Another Andrew Mevis field goal gave Iowa State a 27-7 lead after three quarters.

Breece Hall then took over in the 4th quarter, as he took the first play of Iowa State’s first, 4th quarter drive 80 yards for a touchdown, to put Iowa State up 34-7, and the rout was on. TCU would score a touchdown on a pass from Max Duggan to Tyler Guyton, but a 4th Breece Hall touchdown, followed by a touchdown pass from Brock Purdy to Chase Allen set the final score at 48-14.

Iowa State will wait for the conclusion of Conference Championship weekend to find out their bowl destination for the postseason.
