South Hamilton School Board learn of summer projects at June meeting.

At their Monday evening meeting, the South Hamilton Community School Board received an update on the projects in the building and grounds during the summer break. Superintendent Ken Howard said there are three projects underway. The first one is to paint the interior of the elementary gymnasium. Howard said the facilities  team would like to do the project right and will be bringing a plan and estimate to the table. The second project is to replace all the older interior doors in the middle/high school  to improve the building’s  ascetics and safety features including hardware and door dispositions. The third is the third administrative’s team considering ways to spruce up the outdoor concession stand and surrounding areas while providing some of the elements and facility needs in a far more economical manner. The goal is less than $130,000 in expenses for the district..

Superintendent Howard said the South Hamilton district continues to work toward the completion of the new emergency plans for the two buildings and the district as a whole. The state has set a completion date of June 30th and the district’s emergency plan team has been meeting with external groups to ensure there is input from law enforcement and first responders.

There was an in-depth review of the pay rates and salaries that school nutrition directors receive in a similar sized districts. The data show that current director Terri Cook is severely under compensated and is need of more days outside the school year  to fulfill state and federal paperwork and requirements. The administration and human resource team recommended that Cook’s 2019-20 contract be changed to better reflect her position’s obligations, responsibilities, need for additional days to complete nutritional requirements and the comparative salaries of area nutrition directors. The South Hamilton board voted to approve the new agreement for Cook.

In another matter, the South Hamilton school board approved a prorated classified staff early retirement package for Cindy Sogard based upon the 2018-19 offer made to all classified employees last fall. Sogard has served the district for 14 years and would have been qualified for the district’s early retirement offer next year. However, her custodial position will be terminated at the end of June due to the district’s use of outsourced janitorial services beginning on July 1,2019.

The South Hamilton board set July 8 at 6:00 p.m. for a public hearing on the spending of funds transferred to a flexibility account. In personnel issues, the board approved the hiring of Matt Juber as head boys basketball coach and Jocelyn Hommes as individual speech director. Resignations from art teacher Meridith Spykerman, junior high volleyball coach Dennis Barkema and custodian Jeff Cottingham were accepted.
