Tuesday marked the opener for a couple of our area high school wrestling teams as the Clarion Goldfield Dows Cowboys and South Hamilton Hawks both took part in Triangular Duals.
South Hamilton Hawks
The South Hamilton Hawks grapplers hit the mat for the first time in the 2018-19 season as they travelled to North Polk for a Triangular with Woodward-Granger and North Polk participating.
In the first dual, the Hawks opened against the host Comets and fell by a score of 51-24. The Hawks got pins from Nathan Wilson at 182 pounds, Trevor Thompson at 195, Colton Willis at 220, and Zach Larson at 285. All 4 of the Hawks wins came via fall after the Hawks fell behind 51-0 early through light and middleweight wrestlers.
In their final dual of the night, the Hawks fell 66-15 to Woodward-Granger. Eli Angove got the first points of the match for the Hawks as he took a 9-4 decision in the 120 pound weight class. At 152, Lane Swenson gained the first bonus points of the match as he gained a first period pin for 6 team points. Trevor Thompson provided the only other victory of the match as he put up his second pin of the night for the Hawks as they dropped 0-2 early in the season.
Clarion Golfield Dows Cowboys
The Clarion Goldfield Dows Cowboys wrestlers took to the mat for the first time this season looking to back up their 2nd place finish in the State Duals last season. The match would take place at New Hampton High School with the reigning state champion New Hampton-Turkey Valley Chickasaws hosting the Cowboys and the Charles City Comets.
The Cowboys opened with a 45-29 victory over Charles City in a match that they controlled from the first whistle. Remington Hanson opened with a victory via forfeit at 138 and was followed by a pin from fellow sophomore Reed Abbas at 145 and another from Kamren Jorgenson at 152. Charles City then got decisions at 160 and 170 as well as falls at 182 and 195 before Kain Nelson and Spencer Trenary came back with 6 point pins of their own at 220 and 285 respectively to give the Cowboys a lead they wouldn’t relinquish. Kaeden Langfitt got a major at 106 followed by pins from Tyler Stein and Garrett Seaba to close out the match for the Cowboys in the victory.
Match number 2 for the Cowboys came in the form of a rematch of the 2018 Iowa State Duals Championship match. The New Hampton-Turkey Valley Chickasaws won that match and enter their first dual of the season as the reigning state champions and are currently ranked by IAWrestle.com in 5th place. The Chickasaws jumped out to a quick 6-0 lead before 8th ranked Reed Abbas tied it up with a pin at 145. Three more Chickasaw victories ensued before Colby Lienemann got an extra time decision to stem the bleeding. CGD would close the gap late as Tyler Stein got a Tech Fall sandwiched between pins by Kaden Langfitt, Garrett Seaba, and Spencer Trenary to bring the Cowboys within 2 before a forfeit at 126 ended the match for a 40-32 NH-TV victory. The Cowboys sit at 1 and 1 and will host Webster City and Iowa Falls-Alden on Thursday.
