Only a couple of our area high school sporting teams were in action Thursday night but the Webster City Lynx baseball team made up for the light night as they brought the crowd to a boil with a walkoff victory.
The South Hamilton Hawks girls softball team headed to Roland-Story for a Heart of Iowa Conference matchup. South Hamilton entered the game on a winning streak but ran into a Lady Norsemen squad that is undefeated at 8-0 and had given up just 3 runs in those 8 games with 7 shutouts. The Hawks would manage to put up a season high in runs given up by Roland-Story but would ultimately fall 10-4. Krista Swenson had her first career 3 run home run as the Hawks prepare to host North Polk tonight.
The most thrilling game of the night Thursday came from Webster City High School where the Lynx baseball team hosted an 8 and 4 Pocahontas Area team that is currently ranked in the top 15 in Class 2A by the Iowa High School Baseball Coaches Association. The Indians scored first on a persistently rainy night before the Lynx would tie the game at 1 in the 4th inning when DH Max Hackbarth crushed an RBI double to right. A pair of Pocahontas area runs, only one of which was earned, came across in the 5th and that’s the way the game would stay until the 7th inning when the Lynx would load the bases. Junior Dylan Steen stepped to the plate with two outs and the game on the line and blasted a 2-0 pitch over the center fielders head. 2 runs scored easily and senior Noah McKinney was sent home from first base and beat out the relay to give the Lynx the walkoff 4-3 win. Steen was the only Lynx with two hits on the night and he spoke about the big win right after his walkoff hit.
Lynx Head Coach Addison Kehoe was not surprised at all that Steen came through in the clutch but he also said he’s got a roster full of guys that thrive under pressure.
Kehoe also talked about going 4 and 0 in four days including 3 teams which had winning records.
The Lynx are now in the midst of a 7 game winning streak and check in at a solid 8 and 1 overall this season.
