We had a full schedule of summer high school sporting events including a big North Central Conference clash right here in town.
Eagle Grove Eagles
The Eagles softball team headed to West Hancock in Britt, Iowa Monday night for a conference matchup and for the second time in under a week Eagle Grove would enter the 7th inning with a lead and end up losing the game. West Hancock trailed 7 to 5 but would rattle off 3 runs in the final inning for a walkoff 8-7 win to drop Eagle Grove to 1 and 11 overall this season. Eagle Grove hosts West Fork Wednesday afternoon.
The Eagles baseball team hosted a 3 and 4 West Hancock team Monday night at Eagle Grove High School. The Eagles would prevail 10 to 9 to improve their record to 3 and 5 this season. The Eagle Grove baseball team will be back in action Wednesday when they host West Fork in a game that can be heard live on KQWC 95.7FM.
South Hamilton Hawks
The South Hamilton Hawks baseball team headed Gilbert Monday on a 3-game losing streak and that streak would be extended to 4 games. The Tigers would outscore the Hawks by a tally of 9 to 7 to drop the Hawks to 3 and 5 this year and they’ll be in action next when they visit PCM Wednesday.
Clarion Goldfield Dows
The Clarion Goldfield Dows softball team hosted a 3 and 5 Iowa Falls Alden team Monday looking to avoid their 5th loss in their last 6 games but that is exactly what would happen. The Cowgirls bats went silent as CGD fell 2 to 0, dropping their record this season to 3 and 5 overall. The Cowgirls visit Belmond-Klemme this afternoon.
And it was a big day for the Cowboys baseball team as they exploded for 18 runs and garnered their first victory of the season, an 18-10 shootout over Iowa Falls-Alden. Reed Abbas would register 4 hits while Will Weideman knocked in 5 runs and Zach Martin got the win on the mound. The Cowboys now check in at 1 and 6 this season and will visit Belmond-Klemme this afternoon.
Webster City Lynx
The Webster City Lynx summer teams hosted Clear Lake in a pair of North Central Conference matchups. In the softball game the Lynx would open up a 6 to 1 lead through 4 innings but the Lions would drop 12 runs across in the top of the 5th as the Lynx would be stifled to fall by a score of 13-6. The loss drops the Lynx to 4 and 5 overall including just 1 and 3 in conference play. Webster City softball with a day off today before hosting Iowa Falls-Alden on Wednesday.
In our feature matchup of the night, two teams undefeated in North Central Conference baseball play met at Webster City High School. The Clear Lake Lions entered with a 2 and 0 record in league play and a 4 and 3 overall mark. The Webster City Lynx sported a matching 2 and 0 league mark while sitting at 4 and 1 overall. It was the Lynx early and often as senior shortstop Romel Martinez led the game off with a solo homerun during a 3 run 1st inning. Max Hackbarth would shut down the Lions offense on the mound as he threw 6 and 2 thirds innings, giving up no runs on 2 hits while striking out 14. Jordan Tanner and Caleb Olson each had 3 hits for the Lynx who went 13 for 27 at the plate as a team. The gauntlet week for the Lynx continues with their 2nd of 4 games this week tonight on the road against a 6 and 1 Saydel team.
