April 16th KQWC Sports Rundown

Another day, another rundown, another endless list of high school sports cancellations and postponements.

Area High School Sports:

The Webster City Lynx boys soccer team traversed a cold, rainy afternoon Friday but came away with their second win of the season and evened their record at 2 and 2. The Lynx hosted Ballard Friday for their home debut in what would turn out to be just over half of a game. 2 early goals from Carter Neuroth and Jorge Alvavero put the Lynx up 2-0 and just 6 minutes into the second half, the game was called due to strong rain and winds but the result was official. The Lynx are scheduled to get their opportunity to move above .500 Thursday when they host the 1 and 0 Clear Lake Lions in a game that will be subject to weather.

The Webster City Lynx girls footballers got their long-awaited season opener in Friday at Collins-Maxwell. The Lynx would ultimately fall 3 to 1 but the story was Sara Vogelbacher. The Lynx senior rifled a shot past the goal keeper 15 minutes in for what was her 44th career goal tying Vogelbacher with Kelsey Brown for the career mark. The rest of the way Vogelbacher was draped by multiple defenders as Collins-Maxwell pulled off the victory which dropped Webster City to 0 and 1 this season. The Lynx had been scheduled to visit CAL-Latimer Monday afternoon but that match has been cancelled due to the snow.

All other area high school sports contests that were scheduled for today have also been either postponed or cancelled including:

The South Hamilton Hawks Boys Golf team was set to head to Lincoln Valley Golf Course in State Center for a meet hosted by West Marshall but that has been cancelled. The Hawks boys golfers scheduled to host a meet at Jewell Golf and Country Club against West Marshall and Roland-Story but there is a high probability that meet will be cancelled as well.

The Hawks Girls Track team was scheduled to take part in a 14 team meet at Gilbert High School but that has been cancelled. The Webster City Lynx had also been set to take part in that cancelled meet.

Both Eagle Grove Eagles boys and girls golf team were scheduled to take part in heads up meets against Garner-Hayfield-Ventura at Garner Golf Course but that meet cancelled.

For Clarion Goldfield Dows the Cowboys Golf team had its meet at Southeast Valley cancelled as did the boys track team that was planned to head to the Hampton-Dumont Relays.

And again the Webster City Lynx Girls Track team will not be headed to Gilbert for that meet as it’s been cancelled.

The Lynx boys tennis team had their meet at Clear Lake for tonight postponed.

Girls soccer at CAL-Latimer was also cancelled due to weather.

And finally, Mark Fisher’s Lynx Girls Tennis Team was scheduled to hold its second match and home opener Monday afternoon but that meet against South Hardin has been cancelled with no makeup date.

Iowa Hawkeye Baseball:

The Iowa Hawkeyes baseball team headed to Lincoln, Nebraska over the weekend where the weather apparently wasn’t much better than it has been in Iowa. The Hawkeyes did split a pair of games with the Cornhuskers on Friday and Saturday but had Sunday’s game cancelled due to weather. The Hawkeyes now check in at 21 and 11 this season and will host Northern Illinois for a single game Tuesday.

Hawkeye Softball:

The Hawkeye softball team was able to get all 3 games in over the weekend in Iowa city but they likely wish they hadn’t. Iowa dropped all 3 softball games to the Minnesota Golden Gophers to fall to 19 and 21 this season having lost each of their last 4 in Big Ten Play. Hawkeye softball will look to right the ship when they host Western Illinois Tuesday for a single game.

Iowa State Cyclone Softball:

And the Iowa State Cyclone softball team didn’t get a chance to improve on their 19 and 24 record as their Saturday home doubleheader against Western Illinois was cancelled. The Cyclones will head to Lubbock Friday for a 3-game set with Texas Tech.

Major League Baseball:

In Major League Baseball news, the St. Louis Cardinals were the only Midwest team that didn’t have their Sunday game postponed due to weather. A solid outing by Carlos Martinez allowed the Cards to hold on for a 3-2 victory as they stayed hot and moved to 9 and 7 this season. The Cardinals will visit the Chicago Cubs at Wrigley field for the first matchup of the Central Division rivals in 2018. That game begins at 6:05 tonight.

The Minnesota Twins had their 3rd consecutive home game against the Chicago White Sox cancelled Sunday as the Twin Cities were pounded with nearly a foot and a half of snow over the weekend. The Twins won’t have to worry about snow today as they head to Puerto Rico for the first of two games against the Cleveland Indians on Tuesday.

The Cubs had the final game against the Atlanta Braves postponed Sunday. They’ll host St. Louis tonight.

And the Kansas City Royals had game 3 against the Anaheim Angels called off Sunday. The 3 and 10 Royals will visit the Toronto Blue Jays tonight with first pitch from the Rogers Centre set for 6:05PM.

Iowa Cubs Baseball:

The Iowa Cubs took road losses to the Memphis Redbirds on Friday and Saturday but bounced back Sunday for a 9-4 victory. The Cubs are underway with the Redbirds in the series finale from Memphis and find themselves down 5 to 1 after 4 innings.
