April 5th KQWC Sports Rundown

Professional baseball in Iowa, Webster City Tennis and Girls Track Field kick off today, and of course more high school events cancelled or postponed.

Iowa Cubs:

Professional baseball kicks off today in the state of Iowa. While Major League Baseball opened play one week ago, the Iowa Cubs are set to begin their 50th season when the Oklahoma City Dodgers invade Des Moines this afternoon. The Cubs franchise began in 1969 as the Iowa Oaks, an American Association affiliate of the Oakland A’s. The team became an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs in 1981 and since that time the greater Des Moines area is home to twice as many Cubs fans as any other major league entity. The Cubs and Dodgers open Pacific League play with a doubleheader at Principal Park with the first game beginning at 3:08.

Major League Baseball:

The Minnesota Twins got back in the win category Wednesday night. After an off day and coming in with an even 2 and 2 record, the Twins got behind early 2-0 after the first. But Brian Dozier’s 4th home run in 5 games sparked the offense to 7 runs en route to a 7-3 victory in Pittsburgh. The Twins will now make their home debut at Target Field at 3:10 today against the Mariners.
The St. Louis Cardinals got an absolute gem from ace Carlos Martinez in a 6-0 victory over the Milwaukee Brewers Wednesday night. Martinez threw 8 and a third innings of shutout ball as the Cardinals moved to 3 and 2 this season and Adam Wainwright will be on the mound for the home opener at Busch Stadium against the Diamondbacks at 6:15PM tonight.
The Chicago Cubs with an off day Wednesday while Kansas City had their game with the Detroit Tigers postponed due to weather. The Cubs are at Milwaukee at 7:10 tonight while the Royals have a built-in off day.

High School Sports:

The Webster City Lynx, Clarion-Goldfield-Dows Cowgirls, and Eagle Grove Eagles girls track teams were all scheduled to participate in a relay meet at Eagle Grove Elementary School but that meet has been cancelled for today due to the track not being ready to go from the weather. The Webster City Lynx have found a meet to take part in today however as they will head to Woodward-Granger for the Cavanaugh relays.
The Coed Invitationals set to take place in Jewell today with the boys and girls South Hamilton track and field teams has been cancelled as well.

College Baseball/Softball:

In College Sports the Iowa Hawkeyes moved to 17 and 9 overall this season and won their 5th game of their last 6. With instate opponent Grand Valley visiting Iowa City, the Hawks held on for a 4-2 win. Next up the Hawks will host Ohio State for a 3 game Big Ten series beginning Saturday.
The Iowa Hawkeyes softball team had their instate matchup with Northern Iowa postponed Wednesday afternoon due to weather. The Hawkeye women host Wisconsin for a 3 game Big Ten series beginning Saturday as well.
