Professional baseball in Iowa, Webster City Tennis and Girls Track Field kick off today, and of course more high school events cancelled or postponed.
Professional baseball kicks off today in the state of Iowa. While Major League Baseball opened play one week ago, the Iowa Cubs are set to begin their 50th season when the Oklahoma City Dodgers invade Des Moines this afternoon. The Cubs franchise began in 1969 as the Iowa Oaks, an American Association affiliate of the Oakland A’s. The team became an affiliate of the Chicago Cubs in 1981 and since that time the greater Des Moines area is home to twice as many Cubs fans as any other major league entity. The Cubs and Dodgers open Pacific League play with a doubleheader at Principal Park with the first game beginning at 3:08.
