April 4th KQWC Sports Rundown

No high school spring sports events cancelled today but it’s only because there weren’t any scheduled.

South Hamilton Hawks Boys Golf:

It might be hard to think about hitting the fairway when we look out the window and see the ground covered in snow, but that’s exactly what Mark Ullestad’s squad has been doing for weeks. The South Hamilton Hawks Boys Golf Squad comes into the 2018 season as one of the stronger golf programs in Central Iowa but there will be some fresh new faces on the Hawks varsity roster this year.

Ullestad explained that despite the fact that the Hawks will lack some in experience, they still have high expectations for 2018.

As for the unseasonable spring weather that Iowa has been experiencing, Ullestad echoed much of the same sentiment that spring coaches throughout the state have been lamenting.

As of right now, the South Hamilton Hawks boys golf team is scheduled to kick off their season on Monday, April 9th at Terrace Hills in Altoona against Bondurant-Farmer.

Major League Baseball:

In Major League baseball action, the Kansas City Royals got their first win of the season yesterday. Jake Junis prevailed in a 1-0 pitcher’s duel tossing 7 scoreless innings over the Detroit Tigers. The Royals and Tigers were set to be back at it today just after noon from Detroit but that game is currently in a weather delay.

The St. Louis Cardinals took a lead into the 9th inning yesterday but back to back home runs for the Brewers led to a 5-4 walkoff win in Milwaukee. The Cardinals now check in at 2 and 3. Carlos Martinez takes the mound for the Redbirds at 6:40 tonight in the series finale.

The Cubs and Reds were postponed due to weather yesterday. The Cubs will begin their 3rd consecutive road season to open the season Thursday in Milwaukee.

And the Minnesota Twins with an off day yesterday are back at it today in the second game of a three game series in Pittsburgh. Jake Odorizzi on the mound for the 2 and 2 Twins.

College Baseball:
All interstate series going on in the diamond sports for Iowa colleges today. The 16 and 9 Iowa Hawkeyes host Grand View after the Hawks have won 4 of their last 5 games.

College Softball:
The Hawkeyes softball team is looking to bounce back after having lost 4 of their last 5 games including a 3 game sweep at the hands of Maryland last weekend. The Hawks will host the Northern Iowa Panthers in Iowa City this afternoon.

The Iowa State cyclones softball team had their home matchup with the Drake Bulldogs set for Wednesday afternoon cancelled due to weather. The Cyclones will not play until Friday when they begin a 3 game homestand against the 2nd ranked Oklahoma Sooners.
